The general theme of “Inbound Marketing” by Brian Halligan
was to highlight the importance of social media, blogs and other formats that are
crucial for the success of a business. The traditional “marketing by
interruption” does not work anymore. The main argument the author made was that
people do not ever listen to advertisement or read spam emails anymore. Rather,
they show how to have customers find the business.
The book in my opinion connected to our ENT 3003 class
perfectly. The book talked about blogs specifically, and that is exactly what
we are doing in this class. I believe the book will enhance my future learning
in this class because it showed me that the goal of marketing a business is to
have customers who seek you, and not the other way around, which I feel is what
I am learning in this class.
An exercise for the class that I would propose after reading
this book is some kind of Google scavenger hunt. The book went into detail
about how Google is the major web browser of choice, and has consequently
became a huge pool for marketing businesses. If a business is found easily when
thought of or searched then chances are they are likely to be used. The exercise
would be to search something of interest and come back with which were the
first that were available and which you would actually choose.
My biggest “aha” moment when reading the book was when they
talked about how traditional means of marketing will likely stick around.
Television ads will still be able to sell certain things, while the same goes
for direct mail. However, for an entrepreneur inbound marketing is by far the
most efficient way of marketing. Implementing a strong social media presence is
extremely important these days, especially for entrepreneurs.
