Portmanwho? "Troday"

"Troday" would be used to describe a relaxed day. Basically, it would be defined as a "chill day". It mixes the words tropical and Saturday. People's responses have been extremely funny. Many of the people instantly asked what I had said, but others did not even question it. People who seemed to be closer friends were the ones to catch it, while on the other hand, those who I am not great friends with did not say anything about the word.
The majority laughed at my word, while also saying it was because it sounds almost like a real expression. No one began using it, however, some of my friends jokingly brought it up when I asked them how their day was.

Halfway Reflection

·             The behaviors I have used for this class is consistency and planning. With a busy schedule, I found myself always checking the calendar to see when assignments were due. Once I figured out the pattern, I was able to plan certain days that I would do the week’s assignments. Since there are new assignments every week, consistency has been a large key to my success thus far.
·             Once my classes and other obligations began to pile up, I found myself wanting to give up. What pulled me through was the fact that I am here to learn as much as I can, so there was no giving up. I feel my tenaciousness has developed in the last two months because of how consistent my schedule has been. It showed me that I can pull myself through if I am determined.

·             Some advice I would offer is to find a couple days a week that you can dedicate to the class. This will help with the skills that support tenacity. Also, I would recommend to go through the assignments and plan out what you really can not do and budget your time and points that way. Finally, I would also to try doing every assignment. Especially the ones that may challenge you. In order to develop a “tenacious mindset”, I would advise to remind yourself why you are in the class and in school. Additionally, reaching out to your classmates and teaching assistants is important for development.

Week 7 Reading Reflection No. 1

  • Week 7
  •   What surprised me most by the Wright brothers (Wilbur and Orville) was how they were so determined to fly. They had a simple life running a bike store and it surprised me that ordinary guys would sacrifice time and their savings in something that was so risky.
  • ·             What I admired most about these two entrepreneurs was how the were pursuing something they loved. From the reading, I got a sense that they were ordinary brothers having fun and trying to do something no one else had done. Additionally, I admire their work ethic and how serious they took their passion.
  • ·             What I least admired about the brothers was how secretive they seemed about their technology and plane. My perception was that they did not want other people making their own planes and taking away their fame and money.
  • ·             The Wright brothers failed a few times with a couple of their gliders. Once they analyzed what went wrong, they were able to build upon it and eventually were able to attach a motor, making it the first powered flight.
  • ·             What confused me about the story was the role of their sister, Katherine. I have never heard of her before this reading so learning that she was crucial in their success was interesting.
  • ·             If I were able to ask the brothers two questions they would be “At what point did you really believe you would be flying?” and “Were you scared or excited to try the plane for the first time”. I would ask these just because I’m curious as to how quickly they turned their lives towards their passion.
  • ·             I think the entrepreneur’s opinion of hard work is to never give up and be completely dedicated to what you want. I feel like they would say to do what you love so the work isn’t hard.

Idea Napkin No. 1

My name is Carter Nash. I am a student at the University of Florida where I am studying business. I am person who has some computer skills, but more importantly I have personable skills and a hardworking attitude. My aspirations are to help others, so specifically regarding my business, I am hoping to help senior citizens and disabled people have greater freedom to do things that they can normally not do on their own due to transportation issues.
I will be offering an installed application for smartphones and tablets which allows those who have documented disabilities or those who are over 65 years old to register and receive on call rides to their desired destination.
I would likely offer it directly to senior citizens. However, I will also reach out the the middle age demographic who are looking for easier ways to get their parents around. Additionally, I would offer it to those who are disabled directly, as well as their families.
The value of this application is substantial because of the freedom it will provide. Using this service would diminish the stress around getting places, or the worry of getting your parents places. The worth is in the convenience and freedom it provides.
What sets us apart from others is that we are specifically tailoring our service to those who are not used to being made a focal point. The vehicles alone would be unique and be made specifically for those who need extra comfort or special accommodations.

I believe most of these elements of my business concept fit together. The only question I may raise would be whether I will be developing a unique software and app. Additionally, a weaker aspect may be the targeted demographic. Many people may rather transport their parents themselves instead of paying for it. Overall I believe most aspects, specifically the what and who I’m offering it to and why they care, fit together.
